Who do I see?

Routine appointments

If you are experiencing a life threatening medical emergency, or symptoms of a life threatening medical emergency such as:

Stroke – Think FAST – FACIAL DROOPING/ARM OR LEG WEAKNESS/SPEECH DIFFICULTIES/ TIME TO RING EMERGENCY SERVICES – DIAL 999

Heart attack – DIAL 999  Symptoms of a heart attack – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Routine appointments are available to book 2 weeks in advance, you can do this in a number of ways:

  • face to face at the surgery
  • via the telephone on 01384 566929
  • online via Patient Access/the NHS App.

Appointments can also be changed or cancelled in the same way.

Emergency appointments are released daily at 8am.

 The reception team are fully trained in care navigation and this system has been put in place by the GP Partners at the surgery. Patients will be referred to the most appropriate clinician or service depending on the symptoms or problems they have at the current time. You may be referred to:

  • A General Practitioner (GP)
  • A Practice Nurse
  • A Clinical Pharmacist
  • A Physician Associate (PA)
  • A Healthcare Assistant (HCA)
  • A Social Prescriber
  • A Mental Health Practitioner
  • A Local Pharmacy
  • A Dentist
  • The Minor Eye Condition Service (MECS)
  • Accident and Emergency (A&E) or 999
  • Physiotherapy
  • Talking Therapies
  • Self-Help Information

Extended access

Practices are working in partnership to provide additional GP/Nurse/Healthcare Assistant/Clinical Pharmacist appointments between 6.30pm – 8pm during the week and Saturday during 9am -5pm. These routine appointments are provided at Portway Family Practice.

To book these appointments during normal practice working hours please call and speak to the receptionist at your registered practice.

Home visits

Home visits are intended for patient’s whose illnesses prevent them from attending the surgery.

If you think a home visit is necessary, please phone before 11.30 am.  Home visits are usually carried out after morning surgery but may be later in the day if we have many requests.  In these circumstances, your description of the problem helps us to assess priority
